Back to the Ancient Paths

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and is turning to a different gospel. 7 which is really no gospel at all. Evidently, some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. Galatians 1:6-7 New International Version.

This is what the LORD says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’ Jeremiah 6:16. (New International Version).

Ancient paths are not some mysterious mysticism. When the Bible says “ancient,” it denotes things that go back to creation periods and even further, and many times it refers to things that are actually old but eternal. God, Himself is described as “ancient” and “eternal” throughout the bible. “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.” Psalm 90:2 (New King James Version). “The eternal God is a dwelling place, And underneath are the everlasting arms; And He drove out the enemy from before you, And said, ‘Destroy!’ Deuteronomy 33:27. “From eternity to eternity I am God. No one can snatch anyone out of my hand. No one can undo what I have done.” Isaiah 43:13 (New Living Translation).

The title “Ancient of Days” was used for God three times in the book of Daniel, and it depicts God’s aspects of eternity everlasting, and perfection- Daniel 7: 9, 13 & 22.

9 “I watched till thrones were put in place, and the Ancient of Days was seated; His garment was white as snow, and the hair of His head was like pure wool. His throne was a fiery flame, its wheels a burning fire;

13 “I was watching in the night visions, And behold, One like the Son of Man, Coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of Days, and they brought Him near before Him.

22 “until the Ancient of Days came, and a judgment was made in favor of the saints of the Most High, and the time came for the saints to possess the kingdom. Daniel 7:9, 13 & 22 (New King James Version).

What are ancient paths?

I remember, LORD, Your ancient laws, and I find comfort in them. Psalm 119:52 (New International Version). The Bible is God’s “ancient laws”, though old yet not outdated. It remains eternally relevant. Unfortunately many believers today are not different from a group of people Paul met in Athens, always looking for something new. “For all the Athenians and the foreigners who were there spent their time in nothing else but either to tell or to hear some new thing” Acts 17:21.

There is a lot of wondering going on in our world today. We live in a world of endless busyness in search for what I call “the new” – new thoughts, new views, new insights, and new interpretations for the word of God. Unfortunately, this search drives us farther from the ancient paths and the majority of the people are not even aware they are lost already. Why ancient paths?

“Health and wealth gospel” has replaced the true gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, thereby constantly driving many into perdition. Proverbs 7:11-12 paint for us the picture of a harlot church – here today, there tomorrow. The church that relies on “the next new thing “and worldly principles to do the work of God.

The church that claims marketing and promotion can be effective ways of fulfilling the Great Commission, the church that believes promoting the work of God can be achieved using “modern methods”. “She is loud and wayward; her feet do not stay at home; now in the street, now in the market, and at every corner, she lies in wait. Proverbs 7:11-12. We have embraced what the modern world offers as a replacement for the ancient paths. Men and brethren, the Ancient of Days is calling us to return to the ancient paths. Now is the time STOP, LOOK and ASK, for the ancient paths.

It is time for course correction friends. When a Space Shuttle goes off its trajectory through space, it must be put back on the right track or the increase in the spacecraft’s minimum altitude would have prevented acceptable completion of numerous science goals.

In the same way, God is calling us to return to the eternal paths, the precise and accurate teaching and learning of the eternal truth, the bible. I strongly believe that the goings-on in the world today are some God’s ways of calling us – every believer – back to the ancient paths, and from being “carried about by every wind of doctrine” Ephesians 4:14.

It’s a command

STOP, LOOK and ASK. This is a command dear friend, all other paths will only lead to eternal damnation.

“Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.” 2 Thessalonians 3:6 King James Version.

So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter. 2 Thessalonians 2:15 New International Version

And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. Acts 2:42 New King James Version.

The messages here will not be popular or politically correct. However, it will be nothing but the undiluted Word of God.

As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” Hebrews 3:15 (English Standard Version).
